..I started the Oakland Burners Tribe some years ago and now I noticed that Meetup.com had no Burning Man Meetup groups - and that many fine and beautiful spirits were listed as waiting for one. So, I just made a group there too. I have a couple activities in the calendar already, so, if any of you want to join, look it up at:

I hope to see you over at that site too.

Alameda "My Bloody Valentine" Pub Crawl this Friday the 13th....

Re: My Bloody Valentine Pub Crawl in Alameda, Feb. 13, 2009
Today, 6:33 PM
The Alameda "My Bloody Valentine" Pub Crawl is this coming Friday the 13th to Park Street in Alameda! This takes the place of the usual East Bay Burners First Friday get together. We'll be starting out at La Pinata 3 at 1440 Park St., Alameda at 7pm. From there we'll make our way to several local establishments, including the Lucky 13.

This is RAIN OR SHINE--bring your umbrella if it looks to be damp. We can use them to poke passerbys in the butt....

Come early and have dinner at La Pinata first if you care to. Here's their website:

www.lapinata.com/

I would recommend you not try to park directly on Park St. but park in the parking structure next to the cinema on Santa Clara Ave (It's FREE after 5pm) The restaurant is less than half a block away. You can BART if you don't want to drive. Go to the Fruitvale Station and either take a cab or take the #50 bus down Park.

Dress in your cupid, valentine, Friday the 13th, gothic or playa wear and be prepared for a fun evening!

Berkeley Thai Temple Brunch in danger of being shut down

Our Thai Brunch is in danger of being shut down. Please attend the Zoning Adjustments Board meeting on Thursday night to voice your support for the Thai Temple.

The ZAB will meet at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Old City Hall, 2134 Martin Luther King Jr. Way.

**********************************

Berkeley Thai Temple to Ask ZAB to Allow Year-Round Sunday Brunch

By Riya Bhattacharjee

Wat Mongkolratanaram will be back Thursday at the Berkeley Zoning Adjustments Board meeting to request a use permit modification which will allow the 33-year old Buddhist temple to serve its disputed yet exceedingly popular Sunday brunch throughout the year.

The current permit, issued in 1993, limits the temple at 1911 Russell St. to serving food only three times annually.

When the temple’s volunteers approached the zoning board in April for a permit to build a new Buddha shrine, a group of neighbors complained that the Thai Temple was running a commercial restaurant business in the guise of serving meals to its followers, bringing trash and congestion to the area.

The monks at the temple responded that the Sunday brunch ritual was a centuries-old Thai tradition, in return for which they often asked for donations.

After investigating the allegations, zoning officials announced in June that the Berkeley Thai Temple had repeatedly exceeded the number of events allowed by its use permit.

Although no one was able to ascertain just how long the temple had been violating its permit, the board agreed to give the temple a chance to modify the original permit and address neighborhood concerns.

Board members also suggested mediation, the most recent of which was held on Aug. 6.

Thai Temple volunteers and Oregon, Ward Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way residents met with Victor Herbert of East Bay Community Mediation three times since June, following which they came to an agreement only about the entrance to the new sanctuary.

No common ground was achieved over the frequency of the brunches or the crowds they attracted, Herbert said.

The temple has addressed concerns of some neighbors about the early morning cooking by starting at 8 a.m. It has also cut down on the brunch hours, starting now at 10 a.m. instead of 9:30 a.m. and closing the food stalls an hour earlier than before, at 1 p.m.

“It was the best kept secret in town, or maybe the worst kept secret,” Herbert said of the Thai Temple’s Sunday festivities. “This is a situation that affects a large number of neighbors, some of whom enjoy the availability of food, and some of whom oppose it, and some of whom may be indifferent. Ours was an attempt to see if there were grounds for mutual accommodation.”

Among the list of 19 neighbors who signed a petition demanding that the zoning board shut down the Sunday brunch was Tom Rough, whose house abuts the temple boundaries.

In an e-mail to project planner Greg Powell, Rough quoted from recent reviews of Wat Mongkolratanaram’s weekend brunch on yelp.com, which described “ridiculously long lines” and “super packed” tables on Sundays, to argue that the temple’s efforts to scale down its operations had been ineffective.

“The neighbors have complained,” Rough wrote. “They have put forth a good faith in mediation. With the temple’s failure to change their food service sufficiently to satisfy our complaint, the city has a responsibility to act.”

On a recent Sunday afternoon, more than 50 people were turned away because the temple ran out of pad Thai and mango sticky rice almost an hour before the monks declared brunch officially over.

The remaining 200 who got to stay squeezed into every nook and cranny possible inside the temple, at times spilling over into the adjacent South Berkeley Library lawns to feast on what some described as “the best Thai food ever.”

“It would be a shame if it shut down,” said Cindy Hann, who has been coming to the Thai Temple for the past two years from Moraga. “I think the temple is really trying to be a good neighbor.”

Thai grandmothers in faded gray aprons ladled out soup and red curry chicken to Cindy’s daughter Ellen and then helped 10 other people in less than five minutes.

In the next canopy, Thai youngsters performed a Thai folk dance in pink and purple sarees, their parents bustling around to applaud their performance.

Sakchai Himathongkham, a volunteer at the Thai Temple, said there was no way of telling how many people turned up at the temple every Sunday.

The donations from the brunch sponsored teachers from Thailand who came to the United States to teach Thai and also subsidized tuition for locals who came to learn Thai at the temple school, he said.

“The cost of airfare alone from Thailand to the U.S. is $1,5OO,” he said. “Then there’s cost of living on top of that.”

Siwaraya Rochanahusdin, who teaches intermediate and advanced Thai to children and adults at the temple, said a large number of Thai Americans from the East Bay sent their children to the temple school to learn Thai and traditional music and dance.

“The older generation of Thais who settled in America long ago want their grandchildren to be culturally sensitive,” she said. “They want to speak to them in Thai. We all want this issue to be resolved as quickly as possible. We don’t see it as the neighbors versus the temple. We are all part of the community together.”

Himathongkham described the Temple as a place for people from different walks of life to come together over food.

“It’s like the Berkeley Bowl or the Saturday Flea Market,” he said. “I think of this as a good opportunity for the city to look at the conditions of an urban neighborhood. To look at how we can come together and work on traffic flow and improving dialogues with each other. There’s a lot of misunderstanding since we speak a different language and come from a different culture. But we are working together to make things OK.”

Helge Osterhold, a neighbor, lined up at one of the stalls to exchange dollar bills for red and green tokens, the preferred form of currency at the temple.

“Most people love the Thai temple,” he said. “It’s a place of integration. I come here every other week and just love it. It brings stability to our neighborhood. Just a few blocks down there’s gangs and drug dealers hanging about. I think some neighbors are just blowing this out of proportion.”

The ZAB will meet at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Old City Hall, 2134 Martin Luther King Jr. Way.

Work Independently? Derby Creek Co-working co-operative

Hello Berkeley Burners!
I am tired of working 40 hours a week from my bedroom and Peete's coffee. I'm organizing a co-working co-op. If you are interested please email me with what you do and your work space needs. Thanks! And here is an article about co-working- www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi

Derby Creek Co-working Co-operative
6601 Telegraph St. jerlina@berkeley.edu

The Derby Creek Co-Working Co-operative is a co-working space, a space shared by a number of people to pool workplace resources such as internet connections, while retaining the amenities of working from home or a coffee shop. Members of Derby Creek are graduate students, freelancers, consultants, artists, and other independent types preferring flexible workplace conditions. Co-working is an incredibly new and popular way to work and this will be the first co-operative co-working group in the world.

Why chose Derby Creek over working at a café?

We believe that you deserve to have a work environment that is quiet, clean, comfortable but also communal and anti-consumer! At Derby Creek you can feel comfortable hanging out for hours and bringing your own food. You can also feel relief in knowing that there will always be a place available for you to sit and an outlet for you to plug into. You might even enjoy becoming part of a community of people who also work independently in your neighborhood.

Facilities-
* Shared open table layout, can accommodate 15+ people
* WiFi
* Unlimited tea, coffee and snacks
* Full kitchen w/ refrigerator for co-workers
* Desk lamps, power outlets
* Lockers to store your stuff
* Numerous public transportation options: AC Transit 1 and 1 Express
* Easy street parking
* Two blocks away from Whole Foods
* Across the street from the White Horse Bar
* 5-10 minute bike ride to UC Berkeley Campus

6601 Telegraph is between Down at Lulu’s Vintage Boutique and the White Horse Bar, the corner of Telegraph and 66th st. We are two blocks away from Whole Foods and one block away from the Book Zoo and Café Colucci. You can catch the bus across the street to UC Berkeley campus or ride your bike. We are also in walking or biking distance to the Elmwood shopping district.

As a co-operative we will communally manage the facilities and finances. This will be our autonomous zone where we create the best work environment on the planet!

Hours-
For the first few months we will have limited hours. We’ll be open 7 days a week 10am-10pm. As membership increases so will our hours.

Rates-
Join us for only $150 a month (work trade available). Not ready for a commitment? Drop-ins are welcome, donations of $5-10 a day are welcome.

berkeley spin jam

In case anyone not yet involved is reading this, we're looking at putting together a weekly spin jam in Berkeley. Current suggested location is Ohlone park by Grant and Hearst. Right now the best times are looking like sunday afternoon/evening and tuesday afternoon/evening.

I'm assuming this will have to be unlit unless we find a private location. I might drop by the fire department and talk with them about regulations just in case we can work something out but I'm guessing it's unlikely. Anyone know anything about this? Fire in public parks?

This does affect the timing somewhat as daylight would be infinitely preferable to streetlights if this is going to be more of a gathering/playing/learning thing.

I'm hoping to get this going within the next week or two (i.e. before I leave so I can actually participate).

I'm having a g-sale this weekend and am hoping to off load some items before my trip to Australia and New Zealand. Here is the craigslist ad:

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/gms/459705861.html

In addition to what is listed, there are also a few BM related goodies such as:
- leftover reflective silver tarp stuff. I used this to make an awesome shade structure. Kept the tent cool until way past noon!

LOCATION!!! LOCATION!!! LOCATION!!!

Since the official 2007 BRC maps is coming out very late this year. The prospective location of the camp will be:

9:15 and Freshwater Outer Ring

This is assuming that this area is open to unreserved camps this Burn. I will leave word of the exact location at Ice-3, Ice-9, Arctica, and Information.

IC9 will be setup at Gates Open around 2:00 in the morning and we will officially break camp on Tuesday September 4th.

Just look for a Tan Ford Ranger with a Bike Rack in back. There will be a last minute sign and maybe some traffic cones. If I have the $$$ and time I will string up some EL Wire.

Please message me to reserve your spot. Please let me know how many people are in your party. If you can, please bring EL Wire to light up your tent.
August 18, RE-FASHION Costume Change and Exchange Recycling Event

SATURDAY, AUGUST 18, 2007
11:00 am to 3:00 pm
Humanist Hall, Oakland
390 27th St, between Telegraph and Broadway

Does your alter ego need a makeover? Is your costume closet filled with treasures you haven’t been wearing? Got an unfinished wearable art project that needs a little push of inspiration? RE-FASHION is the solution!

RE-FASHION is a costume swap and modification event. Bring a bag or more of your unwanted costumes, finery, accessories, and notions, and something to hold your takeaways. Please, no underwear or swimwear. There will be a suggested donation, but the focus is recycling, and nobody will be turned away for lack of funds.

The swap begins with a giant collective pile of clothing, the unwanted costumes of all who attend. Everyone is welcome to dive in and find their next new, used items from the pile. Take as little or as much clothing from this pile as you like.

We’ll provide transformation stations, where you can cut, sew, glue, paint, bedazzle, and otherwise renew and combine someone else's rags into your riches.

There will be an outdoor area, where you can supervise your children as they play, and where children’s items will be swapped.

If you’d like to:
volunteer for the event
bring your sewing machine to the event for others to use
help run a transformation station
lead a workshop on modifying clothing
or provide an activity for children

or if you just need more information…

please email refashion2007@gmail.com

Donate your art remnants to Berkeley Adventure Playground

Speaking of greening the burn:
-Isn't it a shame when you complete an art project and there are all these interesting looking bits of wood that you have no use for?
-How long have you held onto a steering wheel, leaky boat, slide, or other special piece of a larger work of art because it's just too cool to get rid of, even though you have no plans for it?
-Are you going to destroy a project that could be disassembled, because you don't know what to do with it afterwards anyway?

Well guess what? The Berkeley Marina is home to a rare treasure which needs these kinds of materials - the Adventure Playground.

An adventure playground is a place where children can play with saws, hammers, and paint to construct their own play structures. They are prevalent in Europe and Australia, but there are only a handful in the United States, because of the litigious nature of our nation (though the accident rate at adventure playgrounds is actually lower than padding and bar playgrounds!).

The playground is currently most in need of certain types of green nails, and tempera paint. However, they are always looking for donations of creative materials such as unpainted, nail free wood, ladders, slides, pianos, surfboards, mailboxes, whatever!

You can visit the playground to get an idea of what they are looking for (and how wonderful they are), and you can also call them to see what materials of yours they are interested in. For more information, see these links:

Playground website:
http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/marina/marinaexp/adventplgd.html

Article about the playground, Family Adventures: Looking for Mr. Dangerous At the Berkeley Adventure Playground ("The Berkeley Adventure Playground isn't so much a park as a hippie commune populated by an industrious collective of people under four feet tall."):

I find it very hard to find spinjams and burns in my area (i.e. Berkeley). Is there any sort of regular meet around here where people can just come and colaborate-teach, learn, play-for free? All I've managed to find so far are classes and I know too much for a beginning level class, but not enough for an intermediate class. I can't afford classes, but really need to get back in shape. Anybody have an idea of where I could go?

My Black 89 Ford Probe GT was stolen in W. Berkeley last night

Sadly, my 89 Ford Probe GT was stolen from right in front of my house in West Berkeley sometime last night (Friday) between midnight and 7:30am. As it's a pretty distinctive car, I thought it was worthwhile to send out a couple of pictures in case anyone sees it. The license plate is 4JMX-985 and it has a gray interior (when it was taken, it had a dark green towel and some dog leashes in the back seat). I'm really hoping someone took it out for a joyride and it will end up being found abandoned somewhere.

Thanks for keeping your eye out for it and please send me a message via tribe if you see it--thanks!

Info on Traveling in California

Info on Traveling in California

Ok Burners,

As promised I am being a serious Sidhe.

For those of you who are traveling through California I have the following link for you.

http://www.dot.ca.gov/

This is the OFFICIAL website for the California Department of Transportation a.k.a. Caltrans. On this page you can type in a highway number and it will tell you of any detours and lane closures.

This is good to know since one of our most popular highways, Hwy 1, has a big detour at the infamous Devil’s Slide near Pacifica. They are fixing Hwy 1 as we speak but I do not think they will finish in time for the Burn.

Another warning is US 101 from San Rafael to the Oregon State Line. As soon as US 101 hits a small town there will be a local cop at the town limits. If they are bored they will follow you to edge of town. This is how the towns make their money. DO NOT GO THE SPEED LIMIT BUT UNDER IT. Know what I mean.

Another area to watch out for, especially if you are driving a truck or towing trailer, is I-80 from the I-80/I-680 interchange to the City of Fairfield. Fairfield is where the CHP 9-1-1 dispatch is. Plus, there is a major truck scale there. There are tons of CHP on that strip. If you see the CHP on the side of the road and slow down and speed up when you are past him… DON’T!!! IT IS A SPEED TRAP!!! There is another roller a mile or so down the road. When you get the hills near Fairfield watch out there too!!! Cops hang out on the curves!!! The CHP on this section of highway do not necessary drive Crown-Vics or motorcycles. They have a fleet of black pickup trucks with camper shells. So watch it folks

I would also like to take the time to tell everyone to “SLOW FOR THE CONES”. When you come across a construction site PLEASE SLOW DOWN!!! Caltrans have many accidents during the holiday season in the construction zone. May of my friends are working out there. We all have families. We all want to go home. So please stay within the posted speed limit in ALL construction zones. Plus the fact that CHP might be running COZEEP and the fines are doubled!!!

Drive Safe

Cross the Sidhe

Found during a garage excavation, perfect for Burningman or someone's home. Needs a bit of sledgehammering back together where the corners come together, but it's in decent shape otherwise.

Yours if you can heft it into a vehicle and take it away.

Shelter Systems Dome for Burning Man - $500 (mission district)

This dome has been used three times at Burning Man and stood up to some pretty serious winds. It's 18 feet across, 9 feet high at the highest point. I'm 6 foot 3 inches and I can walk around in comfort withough having to stoop. It beats crawling into your tent on all fours.

I'm going to let mine go for the best price over $500. A new one would cost you $720 plus $45 shipping - $765 total. I'll throw in a huge tarp and a drop cloth that I use as flooring. Those two items alone cost over $100! I can give you a bunch of rebar too - some of which I cut with the sweat of my own brow back in 2003. And I can give lots of advice on how to enjoy the dome to the max - tips I've figured out in those three weeks of playa time over the last three years. Oh, and super strong rope to keep the dome on the playa.

I'm letting it go to raise some cash. Also I'm going fast and light to BM this year and will be sharing a ride up in someone else's car rather than driving the 24 foot truck I've used the last three years, so I need to slim my stuff down...

Read more about it:
http://www.shelter-systems.com/extra-strong.html
Burning Man informal get together at Kings X (Oakland) this Saturday....maybe 9:30pm

Hello Berkeley Burner-types,

Some local folks from my village, Hushville (few to none of which I know - such is the nature of a 200 person village - the folks I camp with are from Seattle, Chicago, Toronto, etc.), are planning on a small get together at Kings X this Saturday. Nothing formal - just some folks sippin' some libations. By all means, in the immortal words of Monty hall, C'mon down!

I will likley have my black top hat on. If there are multiple people at the bar with top hats, I will be the one not wearing underwear.

Kings X is at 4401 Piedmont Ave at Pleasant Valley Road.

Hope to see you there!

Casual Burner gathering in Oakland this Friday night (04/07) at King's X...maybe around 9pm or so...?

Tis the season to start thinking about costumes and art cars and what new ideas we have for showering in the desert...so, c'mon out and share some merriement with some like-minded folks...

It looks like we have a couple takers from the Oakland Burners Tribe for some good Burner rambling...I have no idea what or if they renamed King's X since they got a new owner and morphed it into a island vibe joint, but, it is at...

4401 Piedmont Ave
Oakland, CA 94611
(near intersection of Pleasant Valley Ave and Piedmont Ave)

I will be the one with the thong SpongeBob panties on...err....I guess they may not be that visible - maybe I'll just wear my cowboy hat??? Or some fur....or a top hat, yeah, the top hat...maybe shout out "Marco" and I'll/ we'll shout back "Polo" - something just too darn cute like that...

Anyone going to the Flambe Lounge bowl Saturday night???

Ride to BRC via Yosemite-Mono Lake-Sparks-Reno

Ok Burners...

I know this is earler... but if you have no ride then I am just in time!!! I have three seats open!

Last Burn I drove from Oakland, Ca to BRC via Yosemite-Mono Lake-Sparks-Reno. This was a long route but very pleasant. If you are in need of a ride and adventerious then keep me in mind. We sill share the gas.

Please Note!!! I have a Ford Ranger towing a Trailer. I can carry some of your stuff in my trailer. My ranger has two jump seat in back. They are facing each other rather then the front window. Some will find this very cramped and uncomfortable. We will be rotating seats with the front passenger. IF YOU GET CAR SICK THEN THIS IS NOT FOR YOU.

Hey!!! If you want to see Yosemite and Mono Lake... Come and join me!!!

Please keep me in mind. I will post with updates.

Hot Dog Stand

Ok Burners...

BM 2006 will be my second Burn. Last year I had a medical scare where I amost did not go in '05. As a result of the medical scare I did not really prepare the right food for the Burn. I just brought can food. after the third day I just had it with Beefaroni. Well, walking down the streets of BRC I found a camp that was giving away gyros. The guy who was doing all of this wanted to do something for his first Burn. He ran out of food but managed to find some more after hearing my story. I was happy and gave him some gogles and lots of glow sticks.

Anywho...

I have been looking to do something for BM 06. I am thinking about opening up a hot dog stand.

What do you think? Any suggestions?

Cross the Sidhe

...now that i know you're here. Hey...I'm Jojo aka Jo-E-Jojo and recently spread my wings up here in the Bay. Burning Man's got a significant place in my heart, mind and soul. It's great to know i don't have to wait for my annual pilgramage to connect with my tribe. I'm also passionate about Dancing to live music (aren't most of us?), usually Jam Bands. I'm up for sharing adventures or simple stuff.... Feel free to give me a shout.
Namaste,

I made an introduction thread so I could (surprise!) introduce myself.

I'm James and I was a first-time burner in 2004, camping with Critical Tits. Looking forward to next year already! I live in Piedmont.

Please help keep an eye out for stolen art

Some time 12/26-27, a prowler stole a bunch of stuff from my house... most sadly including a small round tile table made for me by a friend with a mosaic of the Burning Man, and a pottery prayer wheel with images of whales swimming in the ocean below and mountains and a rainy sky above. Here's an image of the prayer wheel: www.axisofhope.net/sealaska.html I'm bummed about the rest of the "normal" stuff too, of course, but REALLY upset about these two irreplaceable pieces. If anyone frequents swap meets/flea markets and notices either thing, there IS a police report filed w/ the Berkeley PD, so you can call and report them to the police... or buy them back for cheap and I'll pay you whatever you spent. (That, sad to say, was the Berkeley PD's best suggestion!) These are both entirely unique items, so you needn't be concerned that the thing you see is "like" the stolen item... THANKS for your extra eyes!

so nice to see people:)

a bit quiet in here though, it'd be nice to see people at least introducing them selves. I know its a bit early for someone to say "hey lets all go to my place and have a party!" but still be nice to get to know eachother:)

I'll start out by saying that I started this tribe becuase I hang out with the San Jose community and its a bit far to drive or carpool to easily, and the SF bay community is just plain HUGE, wanted something a little more intimate:)

I also know that there is an East Bay burning man community of sorts out side of tribe but I had no interest in being on another mailing list:P so hopefully this will become as popular if not more and that way I can continue my lazy lifestyle:D
